"SAFEs," short for simple agreements for future equity, quickly became a cornerstone of startup finance, and continue to be a vitally important fundraising tool for young companies.

But while the five-page investment document is ubiquitous, even sophisticated entrepreneurs and VCs sometimes fail to realize the mathematical risks contained in their SAFEs until it is too late. Put simply, the venture math in the SAFE is opaque.
