Lowenstein Sandler has released its 2022 Pro Bono Report, which details the firm’s pro bono efforts last year through the Lowenstein Center for the Public Interest.
In 2022, Lowenstein served more than 600 pro bono clients and dedicated more than 25,000 hours to pro bono work, an over-eight percent increase from the previous year. On average, each Lowenstein lawyer spent 65 hours on pro bono matters in 2022. Over the past 26 years, Lowenstein lawyers and staff have spent more than half a million hours on pro bono causes.
Highlights of the firm’s 2022 pro bono work include:
- Representing Afghan refugees in their immigration proceedings so that they can remain safely in the United States
- Helping doctors and other health professionals, those who assist patients through funding and other practical support, patients, and employers understand the legal protections and risks associated with reproductive health care and coverage in the post-Roe period
- Drafting life-planning documents for veterans so that they can stay in control of their health care decisions even if they later lose the ability to speak for themselves
- Assisting more than 190 nonprofits with various transactional legal needs, enabling them to provide essential services in their communities
- Reducing the prison sentence and securing the release of a person who committed a crime when he was a young man, rehabilitated himself during his prison term, and qualified for a “second look” under new legislation.
Gary M. Wingens, Chair and Managing Partner of the firm says: “Lowenstein has been committed to working alongside marginalized communities and the nonprofits that support them since our founding, and we continued to dedicate significant time and resources to important and impactful projects. The stories in our annual Pro Bono Report shine a light on the many ways our lawyers are providing critical assistance to clients who would otherwise lack legal representation in often life-changing matters.”
This year’s Report features images created by one of the center’s nonprofit pro bono clients, Scrollathon. Scrollathon engages communities in the creation of art through storytelling, by leading tens of thousands of participants to roll together ribbons of fabric into small scrolls, and then either name the scroll or tell a story about it. Eventually, every scroll is embedded with others in wooden frames that are attached together to make giant collages, photos of which are displayed throughout the Report.
Catherine Weiss, partner and chair of the center, says: “Scrollathon’s work captures something important about this moment—that people can and do listen to the stories of those who are not like them and find inspiration in both individual expression and collective action.” She adds: “This report includes many examples of people coming together to uplift and expand what they define as their communities. We hope the report will remind readers that together we can make a giant collage with space for all our stories.”
