Peter Slocum, partner in Lowenstein’s White Collar Defense practice, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ).
Slocum has an extensive litigation background with a tenure in state government including as First Assistant Attorney General for the State of New Jersey—the second-ranking lawyer in the state—where he was a principal legal advisor to both the Governor and the Attorney General.
A magna cum laude graduate of both Rutgers University and Seton Hall University School of Law, Slocum’s practice involves representing public and private clients, with a focus on state government issues ranging from complex licensing and regulatory matters to permit revocations, constitutional challenges, and internal investigations. Slocum also represents clients in a wide array of litigation matters, including white collar defense, arbitrations, business divorce, appellate practice, and civil litigation. His commercial litigation and white collar defense work has been recognized by leading legal directories, including Chambers USA (2026) and The Best Lawyers in America (2023-2026).
Slocum is no stranger to ensuring access to justice, having been named an Immigration Justice Campaign “Volunteer of the Quarter” in September 2021 for his generous pro bono work on a case for two Indonesian Christian clients based in New Jersey who fled violence to seek refuge and the freedom to safely practice their religion.
“We heartily welcome Peter Slocum to our Board of Trustees,” said Cathy Keenan, Executive Director of Volunteer Lawyers for Justice. “Peter’s strong legal skills, strategic insight, and understanding of New Jersey state government make him an incredible asset to our organization. Even more, Peter’s joining the board continues a long partnership between Lowenstein Sandler and VLJ, giving strength to VLJ’s vision that justice should be a right, not a privilege. As VLJ continues delivering free civil legal help that protects rights, expands opportunity, drives economic mobility, and strengthens communities, Peter’s leadership will be invaluable.”
“I am honored and excited to join Volunteer Lawyers for Justice’s Board of Trustees,” Slocum shared. “Throughout my career, whether in public service or private practice, I have witnessed how outcome-determinative a powerful advocate is in the pursuit of justice. VLJ does life-changing work, providing compassionate civil legal services to those who might otherwise fall through the cracks of the legal system. I look forward to continuing Lowenstein Sandler’s decades-long partnership with the organization while working closely with VLJ’s staff, board, supporters, and remarkable community of volunteers to ensure access to justice in New Jersey is not defined by one’s ability to afford it.”
