Catherine Weiss, partner and Chair of the Lowenstein Center for the Public Interest, has been named by the New Jersey Law Journal to its 2020 list of the Top Women in Law. (See Weiss's interview with the New Jersey Law Journal.)

A lifelong public interest lawyer, Weiss has fought for decades to improve access to justice for those seeking safety, peace, freedom, and equal treatment and opportunity in this country. Not only does she have an impressive track record of successful advocacy on behalf of underserved populations, she has created a robust pro bono program that helps hundreds of marginalized individuals, and the nonprofit organizations that support them, while creating meaningful opportunities for lawyers at Lowenstein to collectively advance social justice.

Her recent notable work includes reunifying families separated at the border, winning classwide protection for older juveniles arbitrarily denied Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), protecting tenants financially impacted by COVID-19 from mass eviction, ensuring fair voting practices, and supporting small businesses and nonprofits affected by the global pandemic. Under her stewardship, the firm dedicated 23,373 hours of pro bono legal service in 2019 and more than 17,000 hours so far in 2020.

Before joining the firm, Weiss served as Director of the Division of Public Interest Advocacy in the New Jersey Department of the Public Advocate, Deputy Director of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, and Director of the Reproductive Freedom Project in the national office of the ACLU.

The New Jersey Law Journal sought “nominations, from anywhere in New Jersey, of attorneys making an impact at a law firm, in-house legal department, government agency or public interest organization”; 20 practitioners were included in the final list. The journal will publish a special supplement later this year with more details about the honorees, their accomplishments, and their insights.
