Lowenstein Sandler is pleased to announce that Shontae D. Gray, former Assistant United States Attorney and former Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey, has returned to the firm as partner in its White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations & Integrity practices. She is based in the firm’s Roseland office.
“We are thrilled that Shontae is coming back to the firm and continuing in the strong tradition of Lowenstein litigators who balance public service roles in government with serving clients in private practice,” says Gary M. Wingens, the firm’s Chair and Managing Partner.
Gray returns to Lowenstein after close to five years in the United States Attorney’s Office, where she handled all aspects of federal prosecutions, including investigations, grand jury proceedings, pleadings, plea negotiations, and jury trials involving a wide range of issues, such as complex fraud, securities and tax law violations, civil rights, organized crime, and money laundering.
“My years in the federal government have further sharpened my advocacy skills and given me a clear perspective on how prosecutors approach, formulate, and resolve their cases, particularly with regard to sophisticated economic crimes,” says Gray. “I look forward to collaborating once again with my former boss Christopher Porrino, under whom I served when he was the Attorney General of New Jersey.”
“Shontae’s background will be invaluable to corporate clients facing both external and internal investigations into such claims as securities fraud, insider trading, cryptocurrency, wire fraud, tax offenses, and money laundering,” says Matthew Boxer, Chair of the firm’s White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations & Integrity practices and former Comptroller of the State of New Jersey.
Porrino, who currently chairs the firm’s Litigation practice, adds: “Shontae illustrates our ongoing success in attracting prominent, accomplished former public servants, prosecutors, and trial lawyers to our partnership. In 2024 alone, we welcomed Parimal Garg, former Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy; Jason S. Gould, former Chief, Health Care Fraud Unit, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey; Michael T.G. Long, former Director of the Division of Law within the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office; and Alexander Shalom, former Assistant Deputy Public Defender in Essex County and former Capital Cases Clerk for the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court.”
Gray received her B.A. from Montclair State University and her J.D. from Howard University School of Law. After clerking for the Hon. Gerald J. Council, P.J. S.C. in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Gray served as Deputy Attorney General for nearly four years before entering private practice, including as an associate with Lowenstein’s White Collar group.
