Sam counsels clients on all facets of intellectual property. Corporations rely upon him through all stages of intellectual property development, including strategy, patent preparation, patent prosecution, and patentability analysis.
With a background as a professional engineer (P.E.) and with engineering work experience both in the U.S. and overseas, Sam offers an informed perspective on new technologies and related businesses. His work is bolstered by his knowledge of computer architecture, virtualization, networking, software, and semiconductors, as well as his experience in machine learning, manufacturing, medical devices, mechanical systems, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. Sam maintains a special focus on green technologies and is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design accredited professional (LEED AP).
Passionate about his pro bono work, Sam has been recognized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) four years in a row for his work with inventors through the Mi Casa Resource Center’s ProBoPat program, based in Denver, Colorado; Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, based in New York; and California Lawyers for the Arts, based in California. He has also been honored by the Utah State Bar, which gave him its Pro Bono Publico Young Lawyer Award in 2018.
For several years, Sam has mentored IP law students at the Brigham Young University Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic, guiding them in prior art searches and the preparation of patent and trademark applications. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, where he mentors student teams in patent matters for the Bench-to-Bedside program.
Sam is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.
