As part of its programming for Asian American Pacific Islanders Cultural Heritage Month, Lowenstein Sandler’s Diversity Leadership Network is hosting a May 20, 2020, virtual cooking lesson by celebrity chef Lucas Sin of the restaurant junzi. Sin will instruct participants how to prepare one of his favorite recipes and also share how his restaurant is giving back in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

All registered guests will be provided with a list of ingredients needed to prepare the featured dish so they may cook along with the chef from their own kitchens. Beginning at 5pm EDT, the event will also include a presentation that addresses how the pandemic has specifically impacted the Asian American community. The evening will support two charitable organizations, Apex for Youth and Asian Americans Advancing Justice , that provide services to the Asian American community.

The junzi website says the restaurant aims “to connect more individuals and communities to food, culture, and beyond” through vegetable-forward, homestyle, northern-Chinese bowls and bings (wraps) incorporating healthy, seasonal ingredients. Recently featured in The New Yorker, Sin currently runs five locations of the restaurant across New York and Connecticut.

J. Danielle Carr, Lowenstein’s Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, says, “Although lawyers and staff in all of our offices are sheltering at home in the wake of the pandemic, our diversity outreach and programming continue in new and innovative forms.”

Jae Zho, an associate in Lowenstein’s Tech Group and member of the firm’s Diversity Leadership Network, was instrumental in developing the concept for this remote event. “Cooking with Lucas Sin will be the perfect combination of fun, education, and consciousness-raising–not to mention delicious food,” she says. “We’re not letting social distancing stand in the way of getting together to better understand each other’s cultures and perspectives.”

The event will be documented and shared on social media.
