Recent IRS Audit Campaigns
If you've read any of the IRS's press releases over the past two years, you should already be familiar with the IRS's top 3 enforcement targets: high net worth individuals, complex partnerships, and large corporations. This session will discuss how the IRS is deploying the $60 billion in additional funds it received under the Inflation Reduction Act and how those resources are being used in the IRS enforcement space. It will also explore current trends in audit and issue selection, and the new methods the IRS is employing to identify and collect unpaid taxes. Lastly, the session will include an update on the IRS’s newest campaigns, which are largely focused on … you guessed it … “large corporations, large partnerships, and high-income taxpayers.”

Estate and Gift Tax: Tax Proposals Impacting Wealthy Individuals in 2025 and Beyond
The 2024 election is over and the results (hopefully) in. The sunset of the doubled exemption and other provisions from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 is on the horizon. This session will review legislative proposals impacting wealthy individuals and examine the likely impact of the 2024 election and sunset. Included will be a discussion of the exemption, rates, and proposals to limit the availability of popular planning techniques such as GRATs, dynasty trusts, and grantor trusts, as well as the possibility of repeal of the estate tax. This session will also explore proposals to eliminate step up in basis at death, to tax accrued but unrealized capital gains, and to tax wealth. The surgeon general has warned that this session may be hazardous to your health (but beneficial to your practice). To be prepared, bring extra heartburn and high blood pressure medications if they have been prescribed.
