Nathan’s practice focuses on U.S. and international intellectual property asset procurement, management, and protection, including patent preparation, prosecution, and opinion work (patentability, invalidity, and noninfringement). He is experienced with trademark searches, clearance, and registration, and works with clients on copyright registration, licensing, and disputes.

With a background as an electrical engineer, Nathan specializes in the protection of intellectual property in the electrical, software, e-commerce, business methods, and mechanical arts sectors. Throughout his career he has advised a diverse array of clients, including an internet search provider, an audio technology company, a global consulting firm, a federal government value-added reseller, a networking and telecommunications giant, universities, and manufacturers. His legal work is informed by his service as a Captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, where he was in charge of computer, networking, and telecommunication systems, as well as automation and information security requirements for a battalion of Multiple Launch Rocket System batteries.

Clients value Nathan’s depth of knowledge in multiple technologies. He is well-versed in software technologies such as software as a service (SaaS) and business applications, user interfaces, cryptography, cloud computing, distributed processing, virtualization, data processing and algorithmic modeling, machine learning, image processing, and internet and e-commerce. Nathan’s experience with electrical technologies includes digital circuits, semiconductor devices, memory management, microprocessors, hardware-centric cryptography, and communications systems. When it comes to mechanical technologies, he has a considerable understanding of cranes, paper products and manufacturing processes, railcar trucks and couplers, metal casting, and automotive airbags and safety.
