In Compliance Week, Mary J. Hildebrand CIPP/US/E, partner and Chair of the firm’s Privacy & Cybersecurity group, discusses the Biden administration’s more “regulation-friendly” approach to privacy, as demonstrated in a recent letter by Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.) that asks the Federal Trade Commission to investigate possible violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by Google Play. Hildebrand says, “The agency has exercised its considerable authority to enforce COPPA on many other occasions, and I’m personally optimistic this letter will trigger an investigation to ensure that Google and its app developers are playing by the rules.”
