Women and Capital

STRIDES hosted an evening event WOMEN AND CAPITAL, on Tuesday, July 15, 2008.

Although women are starting businesses in the U.S. at twice the rate of men, the success rate of their businesses lags behind that of their male counterparts. More than 70% of women-owned businesses have revenue of less than $50,000. Are women making a conscious choice to limit the growth of their companies? Are women facing a lack of access to capital? Or is it some combination of both?

Our distinguished panel explored the potential reasons behind these startling statistics from four different perspectives:

Nell Merlino - Co-founder and CEO of Count Me In for Women's Economic Independence, Nancy Pedot - former CEO of Gymboree and Party City, Susan Sobbott - President, American Express OPEN, Peggy Wallace - angel investor and Portfolio Manager for Golden Seeds.

The topic was inspired by NY Times writer Lisa Belkin's article "A Capital Idea for Women."
