Lowenstein Sandler has built a national, cutting-edge environmental practice. Our Environmental Law & Litigation practice began in 1974 with the defense of one of New Jersey’s landmark hazardous waste cases, and has been counsel in a number of significant "firsts" throughout the country, including the first civil suit filed by the United States under the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation Liability Act (CERCLA) (District of New Jersey); the first and longest CERCLA case tried to completion (District of New Hampshire); the first Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) enforcement action (District of Connecticut); one of the first CERCLA cases ever tried to a jury (Eastern District of Arkansas); and one of the country’s first major toxic tort trials involving cancer clusters alleged to have arisen from contaminated groundwater (District of Massachusetts).
Our practice received top honors from Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, which rated Lowenstein Sandler’s Environmental Law & Litigation Department as tied for first in the state, noting the "team earns hefty praise for its superb capabilities. It has a fantastic command of the local area, which makes it a real leader in New Jersey, comment sources; the lawyers know the courts and the political environment well, and really understand how the legal process works."
