Kenneth Zimmerman, Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor, Joins Lowenstein Sandler

Roseland, NJ, January 22, 2008 - Lowenstein Sandler announced today that Kenneth H. Zimmerman, Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine since 2006, will join the law firm as a partner in the litigation department.
As the legal advisor to the Office of the Governor, Mr. Zimmerman had responsibility for legislation, judicial and prosecutorial appointments, and oversight of independent authorities. He oversaw a staff of 14 attorneys who reviewed all legislative proposals, drafted executive orders, assessed and approved regulations, and provided ethics and other legal advice.
Mr. Zimmerman was from 1999-2006 the Executive Director of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, the Newark-based urban advocacy and research organization started in 1999 by Lowenstein Sandler founding partner Alan V. Lowenstein. Previously, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Enforcement and Programs for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Fair Housing and a Senior Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Housing and Civil Enforcement Division.
“Ken Zimmerman’s experience encompasses legislative, executive, trial and policy practice, at the highest levels of public advocacy, state and federal government,” said Lowenstein’s incoming Managing Partner Gary M. Wingens. “His broad range of experience will contribute greatly to the firm’s work, and especially enrich the firm’s focus on pro bono and public policy activities.”
As the Institute’s founding Executive Director, Mr. Zimmerman increased the staff from one to eighteen within five years; acquired and managed an endowment of $7 million; initiated a model program to assist urban high school graduates enter the building trades union, enabling more than 200 Newark residents to become union members; and spearheaded passage of important legislation addressing predatory lending, among other achievements.

Mr. Zimmerman received his J.D. in 1988 from Harvard Law School, magna cum laude. He is a 1982 magna cum laude graduate of Yale University. He served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Robert F. Peckham, U.S. District Court, San Francisco from 1988-1989, and was a Skadden Fellow from 1989 –1991.
